This tale is about a dog who was desperately in need and fortunate enough to have his patience and hope rewarded. His story began on the streets, alone and hungry, awaiting the compassion of a stranger.
A Rough Start: Alone on the Streets
It was a scorching day in late August 2022 when Donna Lochmann, affiliated with Stray Rescue of St. Louis, got wind of a dog in dire straits, dozing on the street under the oppressive heat.
The informant provided photographs to aid in the dog’s rescue.
Recalling the situation, Donna, the chief life-saving officer at the organization, shared with The Dodo, “The picture this person sent us showed the dog lying down. It was hard to tell, but it kind of looked like you could see his hip bones. So I knew it was definitely worth checking out.”
Despite arriving swiftly at the location, Donna found no trace of the dog initially. Persisting in her search, she eventually discovered him lying in a puddle from a gutter, presumably seeking respite from the heat.
An Encounter That Melted Hearts
“When I pulled up to the end of the alley, he must’ve heard me. I watched him pick his head up, kind of look around and then flop his head back down on the curb as if he’d completely given up,” Lochmann recounted.
The sight was gut-wrenching, compelling her to act immediately.
Upon her approach, the dog, far from being skittish or defensive, appeared to welcome her presence. He was more than ready to be taken to safety.
“I keep blankets in the back of the jeep, so he laid down right away. He seemed so grateful for air conditioning and a place to be comfortable,” Lochmann recalled.
A New Chapter: Curby’s Journey to Joy
The dog, affectionately named Curby, seemed to relish every moment of his journey to the shelter.
Following a thorough health check, a warm-hearted family, moved by his story, stepped forward to provide a foster home. Curby’s life transformed dramatically with his foster family.
Besides receiving ample food and care, which reflected in his significantly improved physique and health, Curby found joy in the company of his new canine companion.
They quickly became inseparable, often seen napping together or engaging in playful antics.
Though it’s uncertain if Curby has found a permanent home yet, his spirited and affectionate nature leaves no room for doubt that soon enough, a family will embrace him into their lives forever.
