Tiny Puppy No Bigger Than A Granola Bar Defies Odds And Fights To Survive

Dogs are more than just pets; they’re family. In times of joy and in times of challenge, our commitment to these furry companions never wavers.

They offer us unconditional love, and it’s devastating to think that anyone could turn their back on these loyal friends, especially when they need us the most.

When Guppy Hanson Needed Love the Most

Take Guppy Hanson, for instance. This little trooper’s story began under less than ideal circumstances.

Born with a leg deformity, Guppy, a mix of Shih Tzu and Beagle, entered this world in Wetumpka, Alabama, and immediately faced rejection.

Her biological mother sensed something was different about her, leading to Guppy being pushed aside.

Abandoned and fragile, she was no bigger than a granola bar, tipping the scales at a mere 4 ounces.

Guppy’s human owners, unfortunately, followed suit. They doubted her chances of survival due to her condition and made the heart-wrenching decision to leave her at Bryson Veterinary Clinic.

But, as it turned out, this was where Guppy’s luck started to change.

A Fighter from the Start

The team of veterinarians saw something special in Guppy Hanson. They didn’t see a puppy with a deformity; they saw a spirited fighter.

Committed to giving her a fighting chance, the staff arranged to provide around-the-clock care, taking her home in shifts.

Becky Yourman, a staff member at the clinic, was the first to welcome little Guppy into her home. Becky’s daughter, Jess Lane, was smitten the moment she laid eyes on Guppy.

The pup was given her name for her tiny size, reminiscent of a little fish, and “Hanson,” inspired by a character from Scary Movie 2, became her surname.

Understanding that Guppy needed all the help she could get, the Yourman family invested in essential supplements to boost her recovery process. With each passing day, Guppy grew stronger.

Uncovering More About Guppy

However, at three months old, an X-ray revealed more about Guppy’s condition. It wasn’t just her leg; Guppy was missing a shoulder joint and several other bones.

But this didn’t slow her down or cause her pain, and there was no need for amputation. Her spirit remained unbroken.

Embraced by Love and Family

Despite the initial absence of maternal cuddles and affection, Guppy found the love she deserved with the Yourmans.

Their other dog, Libby, stepped in as the mother figure Guppy needed.

“[Libby] turned out to be a great surrogate mother for Guppy. She would clean her and love on her,” shared Lane, reflecting on the beautiful bond that developed between the two.

As time went on, the family started noticing certain behaviors — Guppy wouldn’t respond when her name was called, and she seemed unfazed by loud noises.

After a visit to the vet, they discovered that Guppy was deaf. This revelation, however, did nothing to dampen her zest for life or the family’s adoration for her.

Living Life to the Fullest

Guppy’s physical challenges were never a deterrent to her enjoyment of life.

She embraced every day with an infectious enthusiasm that was impossible to ignore. Digging became a passion of hers, a hobby she pursued with great delight.

Though navigating stairs presented a challenge, Guppy tackled them with her usual determination.

She mastered the art of hopping up each step without letting her deformed leg hinder her progress. From her earliest days, Guppy proved she was nothing short of a warrior.

Not one to shy away from fun, she reveled in the simple joys — chewing on her beloved toys and blankets, and the sheer thrill of a stroller ride with her family.

They, in return, showered her with endless affection.

“My son hugs her every day and tells her, ‘You’re the most beautiful girl in the world, yes, you are!’ He’s not wrong,” Lane recounted with evident pride and love in her voice.

Her resilience, coupled with a goofy and lovable demeanor, made her a favorite far and wide.

Her adventures and daily life are well-documented on her Facebook page, where she consistently keeps her followers engaged with regular updates.

One of her recent escapades involves playing with empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls — proof that joy can be found in the simplest of things.

To mark the occasion, her family organized a fundraiser in her honor, turning a celebration of life into an act of kindness.

Both Guppy and her family indeed struck gold the day they found each other. Their story isn’t just one of survival but of thriving against all odds.

Guppy’s journey is a testament to the idea that everyone deserves love, and that physical imperfections do not define one’s capacity to bring joy and love into the lives of others.
