How Much Should a Vizsla Eat? (Answered)

Vizslas are lively, affectionate, and gentle dog breeds that originated from Hungary. They are very popular in families due to their friendly behavior. They love to stay around people and are very much active.

However, vizsla dog breeds require great care for healthy growth. Proper diet, hydration, and nutrition should be provided in time to promote healthy growth. Usually, younger vizslas require more than 3 meals a day as they need more energy.

By the age of 3 months, meals per day can be reduced to two. Vizslas of 3-12 months can eat 2 to 3 cups of food daily. On the other hand, younger vizslas can eat no more than 2 cups a day. Their weight has a great influence on their food intake.

How much should a Vizsla eat?

The amount of food for Vizsla usually depends on its body weight. It is suggested to provide food no more than 3% of its body weight. For a puppy, this amount can be between 8% to 10% of its body weight. The veterinarian suggests 1 cup of food daily, whether raw or kibbles, for each 7 to 10 pounds.

However, their food intake differs by both age and weight. Though younger Vizsla requires less food, they require frequent foods compared to older ones. For up to 3 months, Vizsla requires more than 3 meals daily. They usually can consume 1 cup of food daily.

With the increasing age, their food intake increases. By three months, they can consume 1.5 to 2 cups of food daily. Then their meals should be divided into two meals as they no longer require frequent meals. Proper water should be provided each time to keep them hydrated.

After 3 months, the amount of their food consumption gradually increases. After 6 months, they can consume 2 to 3 cups daily. A 10-month-old vizsla can easily consume 3 cups. However, their food intake also depends on weight.

Heavier Vizslas consume more food than lighter ones as they need more. If a 3-month-old vizsla is 5 pounds by weight, it requires 1 to 1.5 cups of food daily. On the other hand, if a vizsla weighs up to 10 pounds at the same age, 2 cups of food would be required then.

Let’s explore the amount of food intake of vizsla according to their age. Here, you will be able to identify how much food your Vizsla would require at different ages with different weights.

2 to 3 weeks old Vizsla:

At this age, little Vizslas require at least 3 meals a day. Some may require 4 to 5 meals a day as well. Usually, 0.5 to 1 cup of food is enough for little puppies, which can be distributed into required meals.

They eat both raw and kibbles. You can give different foods at different meals but be aware of the amount. Don’t let them overeat. Overeating often leads to a serious health hazard.

4 to 5 weeks old Vizsla:

When Vizslas grow 4 to 5 weeks old, they can consume up to 1 cup of food each day. Likewise, younger Vizsla, require at least or more than 3 meals daily so that they can gain enough energy.

It also helps them receive enough nutrients, fat, proteins, and vitamins to grow well. Do not forget to keep them hydrated. Change the bowl of water with every meal and give fresh water.

6 to 7 weeks old Vizsla:

After 6 months, you can increase the amount of food in your Vizsla. Give it 1 to 1.5 cups of food daily and check whether it eats them all or not. After several days, you will get to know how much food your Vizsla would need.

Usually, 1 cup of food is enough for 6-weeks-old Vizsla. As we know, the amount of food intake often depends on weight, there might be some differences. So, it is better to inspect first and then decide how much to provide.

8 to 9 weeks old Vizsla:

At this age, you can give 1.5 to 2 cups of food to your Vizsla a day and check if it eats them all. You can increase or decrease the amount as per its requirement.

With the growing age and weight, additional nutrients are also required. So, make sure to meet them sufficiently.

10 to 11 weeks old Vizsla:

The amount of food can be as same as 8- to 9- weeks old Vizsla. 1 to 1.5 cups of food daily should be sufficient for regular-sized Vizsla. As it is not fixed, the amount might increase or decrease.

Decide the amount of food for your Vizsla according to their age and weight.

3 months old Vizsla:

After 3 months, the number of meals usually decreases. The lunch meal is cut off from the meal list as they no longer require 3 meals a day. They grow enough by this time and 2 meals a day seems sufficient.

By this age, 1.5 to 2 cups of food daily are enough. As one meal has been cut off, overall food distribution should be readjusted so that enough nutrients can be ensured.

4 months old Vizsla:

A 4 months old puppy would likely consume 1 to 2 cups of food daily. But these puppies are now old enough to consume food only twice a day. Their required calorie intake has reached 550 – 650 calories.

5 months old Vizsla:

You can feed 1 to 2 cups of food every day to 5 months old Vizsla puppies. Almost grown up by now, they require 550-650 calories of food two times a day.

At this age, puppies grow appetite for varieties of foods, so don’t constrain them into a limited choice

6 months old Vizsla:

Getting bigger day by day, now they should eat 2 to 2.5 cups of food daily. And of course, not more than two times they should be fed.

7 months old Vizsla:

Like the previous month, they need 2 to 2.5 cups of food daily. Their calorie requirement is 600 – 700 calories.

8 months old Vizsla:

At this age, a vizsla puppy will eat 2.5 to 3 cups of food 2 times a day.

9 months old Vizsla:

To fulfill 700-750 calories requirement, a puppy will need 2.5 to 3 cups of food daily. A vizsla puppy at this age, should learn to feed only twice a day so that their body can get enough nutrition without getting obese.

10 months old Vizsla:

2.5 to 3 cups of food daily will be sufficient for a vizsla puppy.  Feed them twice a day. It should contain 750 – 800 calories, which is what their body needs at this age.

Are you overfeeding your Vizsla or not feeding enough?

Overfeeding pets is a common scenario as most owners do not know how much to feed. As a result, the obesity of dogs and cats is frequently seen here and there which is not a healthy choice for dogs.

Obesity leads to serious health problems and risks for your vizsla. Luckily, obesity is not usual for vizsla. They are such a breed of dog that does not gain overweight so easily.

Instead, you should be cautious enough regarding the eating habits of your vizsla to prevent life threatening health issues. Watch your vizsla regularly to spot any unusual incidents immediately. The most common incident of overeating is diarrhea and vomiting

If you find a vomit spot on your rug, start rechecking the amount of their food intake. Though vomit and diarrhea might be a reason for nausea and other health problems.

Sometimes, overeating may lead to a life-threatening condition like GDV (Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus) which is also known as bloat.

Regurgitation of food is a good indicator to identify if your vizsla has overeaten all at once. If this happens after every meal, immediately reduce the food amount.

On the other hand, if you are not feeding your vizsla pup enough then it will show weakness and laziness. In the worst case your pups can fall ill. So you should be careful while feeding your puppy.

How frequently to feed your Vizsla?

It is better to consult a veterinarian for proper guidelines regarding the feeding schedule of your vizsla. Usually, feeding schedule and amount depend on height, weight, age, and growth of your vizsla. So, make sure to see a veterinarian first.

However, it is often suggested to split vizsla meals into two portions. It means you can give your vizsla two meals a day containing all the nutrients required for its proper growth.

Set the almost similar interval between these two meals so that your vizsla do not need to remain hungry for a long time.

Recommended feeding time:

Usually, two meals a day are suitable for vizsla. These meals should have almost equal intervals so that your vizsla does not remain hungry for a longer period and does not even have frequent meals.

Scheduling meals is important as it enables vizsla to digest food properly. It also prohibits them from galloping when meals are given because they will not be so hungry then.

So, meals should be given at such intervals that allow vizslas to digest properly but not to get very hungry. You can distribute the meals in the morning and evening period.

Final thoughts

Feeding a Vizsla puppy should be based on its age. However, the standard food a Vizsla should get is 1 cup for every 7 or 10 pounds of its weight. Vets suggest that, food intake of a puppy should not be more than 8 to 10% of its entire weight. A healthy puppy can consume a variety of foods.
